Most people don't pay much attention to how crucial our washing machines are to us until they stop working. It can be very frustrating when the appliances we rely on in our daily lives break down. We are here to help.
Using too much detergent does more harm than good. Not only can it cause issues with the functionality of your washing machine, it creates a perfect environment for mold and bacteria growth. If you are getting unpleasant odors from your washer, over-soaping is likely the culprit. With the soft water we have here in Vancouver, you only need to use half as much detergent that is recommended by the manufacturer. It is a good idea to pull the soap drawer out occasionally and give it a good cleaning too.
Overloading your washing machine causes A LOT of unnecessary wear and tear on the parts inside, which can lead to expensive repair costs. Even large capacity washers have their limits. If the bearing wears out, it is more cost effective to replace the washer. In addition to this, your clothes need some room to move around to get cleaned properly. Adding more soap will not help.
After doing a load of laundry, it is best to leave the door open so the gasket can dry. It is a good idea to give it a quick dry with a towel also. This is one of the main areas where mold and bacteria will accumulate. It will be black and spotty and cannot be cleaned, even with bleach. The only way to get rid of it, is to replace the door gasket.
Every once in a while, it is good to make sure the drain filter is clear. Make sure you have a container ready, as quite a bit of water will come out when it is opened. Most washers will have a small black tube by the drain filter to drain the water before opening it. When things like safety pins and bobby pins get in there, they can easily make it through the filter and into the pump, which can prevent your washer from draining. This can also damage the drain pump.
Your wash is done and you toss it in the dryer. You press start and nothing happens. It is almost certain that when your dryer breaks down, you will be left with a wet pile of laundry.
It is important to clean the lint filter on your dryer every time you use it. If air doesn't vent properly, your clothes will not dry properly. If your clothes are damp after the drying cycle, you more than likely have a full lint screen or a clog somewhere in your venting.
The same as your washing machine, overloading your dryer causes unnecessary strain on all the parts. Your dryer will last a lot longer if you stick to smaller loads.
Depending on how much you use your dryer, the venting should all be checked at least once a year. A build up of lint inside the machine can create a serious fire hazard. Dryer lint build up causes thousands of residential fires across Canada every year. Poor venting can also cause fuses to blow, your heating element to fail or your control board to malfunction.
Our dishwashers are convenient and real timesavers for us until they start leaking or stop cleaning our dishes properly. For most people, the last thing they want to do is wash their dishes by hand.
Over time, excess food particles and soap residue can build up on the seal of the dishwasher door. This can cause it to leak as well as produce offensive odors. Keep your door seal clean to prevent these issues from happening.
About once a month, put a cup of white vinegar in the top rack of an empty dishwasher, and give it a quick wash cycle. This will help keep the inside nice and clean as well as all the hoses and internal parts. After this, sprinkle half a cup of baking soda on the bottom and run another quick wash cycle. This will keep your dishwasher sparkling clean and odor free.
It is best to rinse off any excess food from your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. This is mainly to prevent clogs in your drain hoses and pump. Excess food can also cause unpleasant odors and accumulate on the door seal causing it to leak.
Whenever you purchase new plates, glasses and cookware, there is usually a small sticker on the bottom. I have found that these stickers are a major factor in clogging things up, especially the spray arms. It is a good idea to remove these stickers from new dishes before you put them in your dishwasher.
If you notice that your refrigerator is too warm or it isn't working quite right, immediate action is important. The cost of your spoiled food can be just as much or higher than the cost of the repair!
We also provide commercial repair services for refrigerators and over/under counter coolers.
Your fridge has condenser coils either underneath or in the back (behind a small plate at the bottom near the compressor), which will accumulate dust over time. When they are really dirty, your fridge will have to work a lot harder to keep things cool and can prevent it from cooling adequately. Clean your coils every six months or so (more if you have pets) to keep it running smoothly.
Be sure to replace the water filter every six months. This, of course, is dependent on how much it is used and the quality of your water. Most fridges will have an indicator light when it is time to change the filter, but you can also tell by an unpleasant taste or appearance, or if your ice maker isn't producing a lot of ice.
If your door seals aren't sealing properly, your fridge and freezer will have to work longer and harder to keep everything cold. Keeping them clean can help to prevent this. Over time, it is common for these seals to become loose, brittle or tear, but they are inexpensive and easy to replace.
Has your oven ever stopped working in the middle of cooking breakfast or just as your about to make a holiday dinner? Oven troubles always seem to occur at the most inopportune times.
Clean your oven regularly to maintain it's efficiency for as long as possible. If you are cleaning your oven by hand, make sure to unplug it. This is especially important if you are using water. Ovens are plugged into a 240 volt outlet, which can give you quite the shock!
One of the major service call outs for ovens is from cleaning the knobs. If you spray cleaner on them, it can run behind and get into the electrical system, causing things to fail. It is better to spray the cloth you are using to clean your oven, not the oven itself.
Heating elements will eventually burn out, like a light bulb. You can tell if the element is burnt out if there are boils and blisters on it, or you may even see quite the spark show! Once they burn out, they need to be replaced because they are not repairable.
